| „Blues is Life – Life is Blues“ Albert C. Humphrey and His Roots of Blues Schon als Albert C. Humphrey vor über 25 Jahren seine Musiker-Karriere begann, wußte er eines ganz genau: “Der gute alte Blues, das ist das einzig Wahre ! Denn Blues ist Leben; und das Leben ist Blues !“ Inzwischen hat sich der afroamerikanische Entertainer und Sänger aus Los Angeles, überzeugter Wahlmünchner, den Spitznamen „Blues-Bertl“ erspielt, hat unzählige Shows bestritten und etliche Platten bzw. CD’s veröffentlicht, hat nach den Anschlägen des 11. Septembers auf speziellen Wunsch des Münchner Oberbürgermeisters Christian Ude das Oktoberfest mit seiner Friedenshymne „Changing Times“ eröffnet und vieles mehr. Das Bayerische Fernsehen produzierte 1998 einen Dokumentationsfilm über das Leben des Künstlers Albert C. Humphrey „Entweder man rennt oder man kämpft“, der immer wieder gezeigt wird. Er stand mit den ganz Großen dieser Welt auf der Bühne, u.a. mit José Feliciano, Louisiana Red, Rodger Hodgson, Manfred Mann, Udo Lindenberg, Sonny Terry & Browny Mc Ghee, Johnnie Johnson, Angela Brown, Konstantin Wecker, hat in ganz Europa und auch in den USA Tourneen gemacht. Ausflüge in die Bereiche Swing, Jazz und Gospel zeigen seine Vielseitigkeit; doch am „guten alten Blues“ führt wohl kein Weg vorbei. „Unter dem Oberbegriff Blues läuft heutzutage so vieles“, sagt er, „das eigentlich nichts mehr mit der ursprünglichen Sache zu tun hat. Man denkt an einfache Akkorde und an simple Songstrukturen, doch das Wichtigste bleibt oft genug auf der Strecke: das Lebensgefühl dazu. Richtigen Blues muss man nämlich nicht nur spielen können, sondern vor allem auch fühlen und leben“. Darum ist es für ihn schon so eine Art missionarische Aufgabe geworden, an die Ursprünge zu erinnern. Albert C. Humphrey & His Roots of Blues, ein faszinierendes Trio, nennen ihr neues Programm und ihre neue CD nicht umsonst „Going back in Time“. Das Motto ist Programm. Archaische Klänge, nur Gitarre, Mundharmonika und Gesang. Aber dermaßen mitreißend und originell präsentiert, dass einem die Spucke weg bleibt. Dabei zeigt sich Albert C. Humphrey in bekannter Manier nicht nur als Sänger mit einer kraftvollen und aussdrucksstarken Stimme, sondern auch als schlitzohriger Entertainer. Mit seinem verqueren Gemisch aus Deutsch, Englisch und Bayerisch reißt er flotte Sprüche, schlägt Gag-Purzelbäume, dass es eine wahre Freude ist. Eine Show in der Show. „Blues muß nicht unbedingt traurig sein. Und wenn Deine Frau Dich gerade verlassen hat, Dein Auto mitgenommen hat und Deinen letzten Cent, dann muß man erst Recht dem Leben ins Gesicht lachen“. Das wussten auch schon die alten Blueshelden, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry & Browny Mc Ghee und all die anderen Legenden, in deren Tradition sich Humphrey sieht. „Allein, um das Andenken an diese großen Musiker zu bewahren, lohnt sich unsere Zeitreise“. So wird „Going back in Time“ sowohl auf CD und noch mehr als Live-Programm zu einer liebenswerten Hommage an glorreiche Musikerzeiten. An Zeiten, in denen die Musik noch per Hand gemacht wurde, in denen die „Superstars“ noch nicht von irgendwelchen Dummschwätzern gekürt wurden, sondern von der einzig wichtigen Instanz, die es gibt: der Seele. Die Besetzung: Albert C. Humphrey, geb. 1951 in Los Angeles/USA, lebt seit 1973 in Deutschland. Schnell entdeckte er sein Talent als Sänger und Entertainer, gründete seine Backyard Blues Band, sein Trio Roots of Blues, seinen Gospelchor Voices of Gospel, sein Jazz Quartett, seine Gala Band Music Magic, wird zur Szene-Prominenz und festen Instanz. Trotz aller flotten Sprüche hat er eine klare Aussage: für Menschlichkeit, Frieden, Toleranz – gegen den (selbst erlebten und immer noch weltweit präsenten) Rassismus. John Paiva, geb. 1943 in Bristol/USA, hat schon weltweite Tourneen mit Chuck Berry, Freddy Cannon, The Drifters, Fats Domino, The Chiffons und The Four Tops hinter sich. Sein Gitarrenspiel ist unverwechselbar, wunderbar entspannt und trotzdem sehr kraftvoll. Wie ein großer Teddybär sitzt er auf seinem Schemel, wie ein Fels in der Brandung, und er kann mit seiner Kunst dennoch Gefühle hervorrufen, die alles andere als ruhig und gelassen sind. Gefühle die unter die Haut gehen. Hubert Hofherr, geb. 1961 in Zwiesel/BRD, hat sein Mundharmonika Spiel im engen Kontakt mit Größen wie Billy Branch, J. W. Williams, Magic Slim, Eddie Clearwater und Alabama Red verfeinern können. Seine Wurzeln liegen im Chicago Blues, seine Ambitionen decken sich mit denen von Albert C. Humphrey. Stimme und Mundharmonika ergeben ein perfektes Team, freuen sich am gegenseitigen Wechselspiel und können in der gemeinsamen Perfektion immer wieder angenehmst überraschen.

“Blues Is Life – Life Is Blues” Even when he commenced his musical career more than 25 years ago, Albert C. Humphrey knew exactly: “good old blues is the only real blues! Because blues is life and life is blues”. In the meantime the Afro-American entertainer and singer from Los Angeles, resident of Munich by choice, known by his nickname “Blues Bertl”, has staged countless shows and issued numerous albums and, following the terrorist attacks of September 11, at the express wish of Munich Mayor Christian Ude, opened the Oktoberfest with his hymn of peace “Changing Times” and much more. In 1998, Bavarian Television produced a documentary on the life of Albert C. Humphrey entitled “One Either Fights or Runs” that is aired repeatedly. He has stood on stage with the musical greats of this world, for example José Feliciano, Louisiana Red, Rodger Hodgson, Manfred Mann, Udo Lindenberg, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Johnnie Johnson, Angela Brown, Konstantin Wecker. He has also made tours throughout Europe and in the USA. Excursions into the fields of swing, jazz and gospel are testimony of his versatility, nonetheless there is no way past “good old blues”. “Today, the term blues is used to describe so many things”, he says, “which really have nothing at all to do with the original concept. One thinks of simple chords and clear song structures, but all too often the most important thing is neglected: feeling. Real blues must not only be played, but also felt and lived.” And this has now become a type of missionary assignment for him - recalling the origins. “Albert C. Humphrey & His Roots of Blues”, a fascinating trio, have not named their new programme and latest CD “Going Back in Time” for nothing. The motto is programme, archaic sounds, only guitar, mouthorgan and song. But performed so captivatingly and originally that it almost takes one’s breath away. Whereby Albert C. Humphrey is shown not only to be a singer in familiar style with a powerful and highly expressive voice, but also an astute entertainer. In his interwoven mixture of German, English and Bavarian he wisecracks, banters and jests that it does one’s heart good. A show within a show. “Blues doesn’t need to be sad. Even if your wife has just left you, taken your car and your last cent. Then it really is time to laugh life in the face.” A revelation that was no stranger to the old blues heroes Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and all those other legends in whose tradition Humphrey sees himself. “Preserving the memory of these great musicians is alone worthy of our time journey.” And along these lines “Going Back in Time” both on CD and even more so as live programme becomes an endearing homage to the glorious times of these musicians. Times when music was still hand-made and when the “super stars” were not picked by some smooth talkers but by the only important criterion there is: the soul. All concerts are always one-time blues premieres that one just has to experience. Albert C. Humphrey, born in 1951 in Los Angeles/USA, lives in Germany since 1969. Quickly he recognized his talent as singer and entertainer, founded his Backyard Blues Band, his trio Roots of Blues, his gospel choir Voices of Gospel, his Jazz Quartet, his Gala Band Music Magic, becomes scene personality and character. Notwithstanding his wisecracking, he has a clear way of thinking: for humanity, peace, tolerance - against (self-experienced and still prevalent worldwide) racism. John Paiva, born 1943 in Bristol/USA, can already look back on world tours with Chuck Berry, Freddy Cannon, The Drifters, Fats Domino, The Chiffons and the Four Tops. His guitar sound is unmistakeable, wonderfully relaxed but yet very powerful. He sits on his stool like a big teddy bear, like a rock in raging waters and with his art he can call up feelings that are anything but placid and peaceful. Feelings that get under the skin. in Zwiesel/Germany, refined his mouthorgan skills in close contact with
greats like Billy Branch, J. W. Williams, Magic Slim, Eddie Clearwater
and Alabama Red. His roots lie in Chicago Blues, his ambitions tally
with those of Albert C. Humphrey. Voice and mouthorgan blend into a
perfect team, gladden at the reciprocal interplay and in complementary
perfection give rise to delightful surprises time and again.

The celebrated music journalist Arno Frank Eser (Abendzeitung Munich) has written a book on the exceptional artist Albert C. Humphrey. Title: “Albert C. Humphrey, Künstler und Lausbub” (Artist and Rascal).
In the series “Lifelines” Bavarian Television produced a documentary in 1998 on the many-sided life of Albert C. Humphrey entitled “One Either Fights or Runs”. TV München also showed a portrait in 2004 on various aspects of the life of Albert C. Humphrey with the title “Dossier 24”, an interesting cross section of a varied artistic life.
